The quality of personal relationships has been found to have a moderate to high impact on physical health conditions including cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, and dementia, as well as mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, stress, and PTSD. Our ability to cultivate healthy relationships has a demonstrated and clear connection to overall happiness and well-being.
Spirituality—defined broadly as one’s search for meaning, purpose, and the pursuit toward interconnectedness with self, others, community, and a higher power — has been linked to better physical, psychological, and social health outcomes. In a systematic review of more than 3,000 peer-reviewed studies, the overwhelming majority of studies revealed a link between spirituality and better mental health. Pursuing spirituality led to decreased depression and anxiety, improved self-esteem, higher life satisfaction, decreased suicide, decreased alcohol and drug use, and increased social support. A connection was also found between spirituality and improved physical health.
